Lead Service Line Inventory

Lead Service Line Inventory Under Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR)

The Lead Service Line Inventory is an inventory of every service line in the distribution system, including both the district owned and customer owned service lines.  Each location is categorized as either lead, non-lead, galvanized requiring replacement, or lead status unknown.

Four categories for service line materials:

  • Lead - where the service line is made of lead.
  • Galvanized Requiring Replacement - where a galvanized service line is or was at any time downstream of a lead service line or is currently downstream of a "Lead Status Unknown" service line, it must presume there was an upstream lead service line.
  • Non-lead - where the service line is determined through an evidence-based record, method, or technique not to be lead or galvanized requiring replscement.
  • Lead Status Unknown - where the service line material is not known to be lead, galvanized requiring replacement, or a non-lead service line, such as where there is no documented evidence supporting material classification.

Walnut Creek SUD was initially created in the 1960s and up until the early 1980s installed copper service lines from the water main to the meter.  During the 1980s the district switched a non-lead (HDPE) service line material and proactively replaced the previously installed copper service lines.
